How do cats perceive the world around them?

According to Egyptian myths, in ancient times, the goddess Bastet and her father, the sun god Ra, discussed how to name the wonderful fluffy animal that the god Ra turned into when he hunted the evil serpent Apep. Yes, and Bastet's head was the head of this animal.

Bastet suggested calling it tailed, but Ra objected that monkeys are tailed . Bastet suggested calling him toothy, but Ra did not agree: the crocodile has more teeth. Then sighted, said Bastet.

And since then the Egyptians called the cat “mau”, which means “seeing”, “seeing” in their language.

Perhaps the Egyptians came up with a name similar to the sound that cats make. People have long admired cat eyes. To see well, a cat needs 6 times less light than a human. Compared to the eyes of other mammals, the eyes of a cat are very large relative to the size of the body and are second only to the organs of vision of some lemurs.

The pupil is elongated in the light, in the dark it opens by 1.5 cm, catching the smallest particles of light (in a person, the pupil is more than 8 mm not disclosed). By the way, some breeds of cats do not have eyelashes.

Cats see well at a distance of 75 cm to 6 m. And this is understandable: a normal mouse will not climb into its mouth. The cat clearly sees only one object in front of him, the rest are slightly in the fog: after all, she needs to catch one mouse, even if there are several of them in front of her.

It is believed that cats do not see small objects very well, nevertheless they are deftly catching flying flies from the first throw. It was believed that cats perceive the world in black and white, but now it has been proven that cats distinguish between colors: they like dark yellow and light brown tones (the colors of possible prey), but the combination of blue, orange and green causes them to panic.

Why? It is somehow doubtful that a terrible orange-blue beast with a green head once hunted cat ancestors. Scientists cannot explain this fact. How difficult it is to explain the love of white cats for cherry and dark crimson flowers.

Cats are afraid of cucumbers. Perhaps because of the green color?

Why do cat eyes glow? Because they have a special layer of cells that helps the eye to “catch” those crumbs of light that are even in complete darkness. The light is reflected from this layer, and we see two green lights.

Who wakes up earlier – a cat or her whiskers?

When a cat sleeps, its whiskers are pressed to its muzzle – why does a sleeping cat need extra information about the world? But as soon as something changes around, the whiskers begin to move, receive information and send it to the brain. Anxiety – and the cat opens its eyes and begins to act. If all is well, the mustache again fits snugly to the muzzle and the dream continues.

More about the senses. In 1965, biologists from California conducted experiments that showed that cats feel x-rays. They see them a little with their eyes, but mostly they feel them with the olfactory bulb, which is located behind the nasal passage. No animals reacted to irradiation with small and harmless doses, and the cats ran away.

A cat's hearing is 3 times better than a human's. This is helped by the shape of the ear – even weak sounds are well caught in such a pointed funnel.

There are 32 muscles in the ear of a cat (we have six weak ones). A cat's ear rotates 180 degrees ten times faster than a dog's ear. Cats hear high-pitched sounds better, and this is understandable: mice do not speak in a bass voice, and it is important for a cat to “hear” its dinner.

You can, of course, smell dinner. A cat smells 14 times better than a person, although much weaker than a dog (by the way, the pattern of a cat's nose is as unique as human fingerprints, which determine the identity of a criminal). By smell, cats recognize each other, by sniffing, acquaintance begins – this is how cats greet.

If the smell of food is not pleasant, the cat will refuse it. It should be noted that a cat has a completely ordinary taste organ – papillae on the tongue. She feels salty with the tip of her tongue, bitter with the back of her tongue, and most cats react poorly to sweets. This is understandable – a mouse or any other meat is delicious for a cat.

Although the list of cat food compiled by their owners includes oranges, grapes, potato peels (pulled from the trash can), especially chocolate, olives, ice cream, pickled and fresh cucumbers, cakes, cookies, gingerbread, jam pies, fresh and pickled tomatoes, cheese, dates, halvah, garlic, apples.

Do cats hear with their eyes?

Scientists have studied the activity of the brain of cats and found a strange thing: the visual centers of the cat's brain react to sound! That is, cats hear a little with their eyes.

And cats also smell with their mouths (there is such a Jacobson organ in the upper palate, cats “taste the smell” for them).

The sense of touch in cats is very interesting. Of course, like all animals, cats feel touch with their skin. But much more important for them are vibrissae – long hairs, “stuck” throughout the coat. Vibrissae pick up the slightest vibrations in the air. When a cat touches an unfamiliar object with its paw, only vibrissae on the paw touch the object.

That's enough – everything is clear to the cat. Therefore, in no case should you cut your cat's whiskers – she will be poorly oriented, she will have a bad mood until the whiskers grow back. Interestingly, in breeds with short wavy hair (Devon Rex, Cornish Rex), vibrissae are also wavy. whether it is in the hole, because the length of the whiskers is equal to the width of the cat's body. But if the cat has grown fat and its sides stick out more than the whiskers stick out, then the information will turn out to be incorrect. The mustache “says” that the hole is not small and the cat will completely enter it, but the fat tummy gets stuck!
